Why "More Leads" Is Not Your Real Problem

Intro
"I just need more leads" is one of the most common things founders say — and one of the most frequently wrong diagnoses. Before chasing lead volume, it's worth checking whether leads are actually the constraint.
Check your close rate first
If a large share of qualified leads already aren't converting, adding more volume just means more people falling out of the same leaky funnel. Fixing the close rate usually has a faster payoff than growing top-of-funnel traffic.
Check what happens after the "yes"
Sometimes the real ceiling isn't demand — it's fulfillment. If the business can't deliver well at a higher volume, more leads just create more strain without more sustainable growth.
Check whether it's a confidence problem in disguise
Occasionally "we need more leads" is really a founder avoiding a harder question — like whether the offer, price, or positioning needs to change. More leads can feel like a safer fix than confronting that.
Closing
More leads is rarely free — it takes more budget, more time, or more risk. Before investing there, it's worth confirming it's actually the bottleneck, not just the most familiar one.
